Common Questions

What ages is 30aTeenz for?

30aTeenz is designed for teens ages 12 to 18. Classes are grouped by age and experience so the work is challenging at the right level. Ages listed on each course are recommendations based on typical readiness. Parents make the final call on fit.

Do students need prior coding experience?

No. Our intro courses (STEM & Coding Foundations and Python for Beginners) assume no prior experience. The Advanced Teen Lab expects some coding or tech comfort.

Are classes drop-off?

Yes. 30aTeenz is a drop-off program. Teens arrive, focus, work in the group, and leave with a project or presentation to show for the session.

Do students bring their own laptop?

Yes, for any hands-on technology class. Bring a laptop that can run a modern browser and a basic Python install. We can advise families who need a minimum-spec recommendation.

How long are sessions?

Each course is a 6-week session. Classes meet once a week for 2 hours, for a total of 12 contact hours per course.

Why start with the Thinking Track before a hands-on lab?

The Thinking Track courses are lecture and discussion based, but they're the foundation every teen needs before diving into hands-on coding and tech work. Clear thinking beats fast typing. Teens who start with Thinking do better in the labs, ship better projects, and know what they're building and why.

Can my teen take more than one class?

Yes. Each course is its own 6-week session, and many families stack a Thinking Track course with a Coding lab in the same term. You can also roll from one term into the next.

Are classes appropriate for homeschool students?

Yes. 30aTeenz is built with homeschool, hybrid, and alternative learners in mind. Small groups, substantive discussion, and real projects work especially well for self-directed teens.

What if my teen is shy or unsure about technology?

That's exactly who many of these courses are for. Small-group caps (15 for discussion, 10 for labs) mean every teen gets heard, supported, and paced into the work. Prior comfort is not required.

How are hands-on coding classes different from discussion-based classes?

Lecture and discussion courses (the Thinking Track) focus on reasoning, analysis, and communication, taught in conversation. Hands-on labs (STEM & Coding and Advanced Tech) are working sessions where teens build something real.

Is 30aTeenz an approved Step Up vendor? Can we use Step Up or PEP funds?

Yes. 30aTeenz is the teen division of 30aKidz, an approved provider for Florida's Step Up for Students ESA program. Our courses are structured educational enrichment designed by an educator and qualify for scholarship funding.
